word to the wise. if you do get hired/work here. make sure you tell people you work for Trans States Airlines, not our truncated name TSA. ik made that mistake and most of my family and friends still think i wear a blue shirt and badge to work and rummage through peoples bags.
At least they don't think you're a pedophile.... |

Fixed. Thanks for keeping me in line. ;) Not rightly sure what I was thinking-- chasing my kid-o around and typing must not mix.
UND--Thanks bud, will do. |

Guessing that won't be an option because I don't have enough posts. Anyway-- here goes:
The interview-- It was a good experience. Everyone is polite and Kathy made us feel welcome when we showed at 8:05 for an 8:30 interview. We sat in the classroom after stowing our bags in the closet and reviewed paperwork and talked amongst ourselves until Ed Phelps walked in to greet us and give an overview for the morning. He then collected all of our copies and our applications, and then issued the 50 question 'multiple guess' test. It was pretty straight forward with questions covering basic weather and airspace requirements, metar and general weather questions (freezing rain above/ice pellets, etc), some questions about inoperative ILS components, and jepp charts. A prep from the weather and instrument chapters in the AIM would help you prepare. Some say it is from the ATP question bank, but it is not. Do not try to memorize study answers for performance, etc. We were then dismissed into the lobby to hang out and mingle as they called us in one at a time into the technical portion with Ed and Stuart. They began with background questions--- basically anything on the application they want a story for (checkrides/tickets, etc) while they looked over your logbook and original copies of all documents. Technical questions included describing the ice protection system on the EMB145 followed by a description of the ice detectors. Afterwards they asked to fingerfly an approach if "at this IAF and *000 ft, cleared approach" and if i could legally shoot it. 91? 121? Then about the prop system on my current multi. Not much else. They covered the HR portion themselves with basic Why TSA? Which base? If awarded the other, would it be a problem? etc. Talked about class dates then Kathy made one last pass over the app and handed out a study packet on the 145 LR and two company produced dvds. Congrats on the interview, let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for the help! Looking forward to some good news and seeing you out there! Good luck to you in training. |
hold-in-lieu where did you get info on the de ice system for the ERJ 145? I'm assuming it's a simple bleed air system.

I still gotta get an interview. I'm on the phone with Kathy trying to get in the door. I'm kinda surprised there is no sim ride.
|
Yeah it's pretty straight forward. And the items they want memorized is sent to you beforehand. Nothing too heavy.
PM me if you've got any questions. Good luck! |
Hey, I'm here to help too...
For those of you in class right now, send me a PM if you have any questions since the old mentor list is a little outdated. Etc Etc. Now it's gym time! Come at me bro! |
Any word on when the next class is?

July 6th is what I heard... (weird that is a Wednesday)

Got the email offer for a class date, but unfortunately I am tied to a current training contract with a corporate company I can't financially get out of. Good luck to those in the upcoming classes.

We're planning on 12 weeks-ish. Including IOE. |

Heard they are planning on running new hire classes of 6-8 for the rest of the year minus June. Also heard possible upgrades in Q3/Q4, somewhere around 18 total.
|
Trans States isn't going anywhere. Don't let the upgrades fool anyone. There will never be any action by the NMB to release the pilots. Some say they are letting themselves be threatened by the company's claim to "dissolve the company" if a proffer is offered. Others say it's because they're too far away from an agreement to get a proffer. Regardless, they haven't heard a peep out of them since last may/june and every minute there is no action by the NMB is one more minute closer to the end of the United contract TSA has for 18 airplanes. 2013 isn't so far away now and it will only get closer. Soon old Hulas will be able to decide to not renew leases on the airplanes and then let the contract expire. He only has the at risk flying for US Airways until about may/june of next year so that might be 6 planes gone right there. Don't worry... I'm sure he'll offer furloughed 10 year captains at the company "preferential hiring" for first year FO status at go jets  Then compass and go jet can whipsaw each other to death.

I also have an interview scheduled next month. times 1000/100 Also, check out the Pilot Projects . It usually fills up pretty quick as everyone (AA, GoJet, Air Choice One, USA3000, etc.) uses it. Another way is to link up with some people before ground school, secure a large hotel room, and split the cost. |

IIRC, you were paid something like $900/month during training (although, that doesn't seem right, someone will correct me). Accommodations are your responsibility, which means you gotta find a hotel that will give you a monthly rate. Used to be the Pear Tree was where most of us were holed up. But not sure anymore these days.

If only we had something that nice out here in IAD. Back in my day it was 60 hours at 22.29 and you got 800 for living accommodations paid when you finished IOE. Now that might be WAY outdated but that's the way it was when good ole uncle Saluki went through the schoolhouse. :D P.S Nice to see my ex in your avatar... she used to look a lot better back in the days haha |

Nice! Just ordered a 2012 Gallardo. |

Yes at IAD it wouldn't stand out much, especially if you park valet. |

Haha u know what it is. Nothing like seeing an M5 or a Corvette with the license plate that says UALPilot1 or JetFlyer or anything with JET on it parked next cars made in the 90s. |
