Rollaboard bag recs?
#11
Could it be because the bags are substandard quality and fall apart on cue? LW charges a premium and then offers a "low price refurb" and calls it customer service. I've owned three of those POS's. Never again.
$99 Costco bag still looks new after 4 years and weighs a third.

Second that. Got one in 1998 and everything except the ripstop fabric has been replaced for free. But the newest model made significant practical improvements for crew.
- the extra bag hook is attached permanently but can be hidden in a pocket at the top. Don’t have to take it off when the bag has go in cargo
- inside the lid there’s a full length and width storage compartment about 1” thick that is nice for segmenting clothing items
- cockpit storage in my aircraft is 22” high giving each pilot 11”. This bag is 10” but has a unique ratcheted expansion to take it to 11” when working or up to 14” for other traveling
- handles are flush to the bag so the side one doesn’t get hung up on the side of the bag storage compartment
- there’s a third handle at the bottom of the bag so if you stow the bag top first you can easily pull it out
- the wheels were moved out to the very edge which gives it more stability and removed the housings from the storage area of the bag
In fact I had to buy it. Got a great deal at Christmas.

Agreed. Used a LW Stealth for 4 years and finally saw the light. Briggs and Riley Baseline Domestic Carry On is the way to go. 20% discount for airline employees as well.

Back in the day there were no wimpy pilots ... It was a badge of honor to retire with one arm 4" longer than the other.
When the wimp wheels did come out in the 80s they were the chrome folding variety and you would strap your standard company issue bag to the thing with bungees.
So there's that!

I will probably buy a Briggs and Riley as my LW replacement.
The very first time I gate checked my LW stealth on that Skywest flown United paint crj200
it came back with the bottom cracked and the metal angles bent. The very first time! To LW credit they fixed it all for free, but I still had to pay the shipping to get it there.

I will never understand pilots. We can buy any 22 inch rollaboard and we choose the ugliest, heaviest, and most expensive options possible. "I paid $450 for this bad boy 15 years ago and with a minor $200 overhaul 8 years ago it is still rolling..." the zippers haven't worked in a decade, it smells like 15 years of gym socks, and you went out on oji because you lifted it weird that one time getting it out of the van.
For the same money you can buy a brand new bag every three years. No broken wheels, zippers, or handles ever again. 22 inch, no bags to catch on the sides if you go guppy, and 4 wheeled suitcases are for grandma who likes to block the moving walkway.

Luggage Works has a new series called Aurora that is a plastic framed competitor to TravelPro. It's built a little better but a little smaller than the TP. I did buy one recently but got it discounted at the store which swayed me. Normally I plan to spend $50/yr on my bag, so get three years out of a $150 bag. I'm fine with that. I previously had a Stealth and it was heavy and had to be sewn back together, the refurb cost after six years on a $300 bag was $229. I said no thanks and have been buying cheaper bags since.
I prefer the layout of the TP's more than the LW bags but the zippers are better on the LW. I wish TP had one step above the FlightCrew pilot series that was made with beefier zippers with the same pocket and internal layout.
