Career move
 

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I can't seem to find the thread today. Can anyone share their experience using company paid moves, specifically the career move? Did it work out as advertised? Any pitfalls? Anything end turn out better than expected? What kind of timeline was involved?

I used a Merger Move (CBA LOA 3), which had all the entitlements of the career move EXCEPT the positive space travel. Everything worked as advertised. The company outsources the expense reporting to another company; you submit/arrange all your entitled expenses through them (90 days of hotels, positive space house hunting trip for you and spouse, etc.). The people I dealt with were all very good and never had a problem. They also handle the interface with the moving company. If I remember correctly, we were allowed 20,000lb of household goods and two cars. All the specifics are spelled out in section 10 of the CBA.

Career Move question:

Can you move to Florida and commute to EWR for a career move, or does it have to be in base/domicile?

It's spelled out in Section 10 of the CBA, as are the rest of the details. New location must be within 200 miles of new base. So, no.

Just wait for the UAL SE/Florida base to open....then you'll be in like flynn!

An important detail not spelled out in the CBA is it's statute, not nautical, miles and is calculated by roads, "not as the crow flies." Double check that, as it might be negotiable, but it makes a bigger difference than you'd think. If you're in Houston it puts SAT and CRP out of reach and if your in SFO it puts Reno out of reach.

It appears now that under the new tax law company paid moving expenses will be treated as taxable income. It was a tax free benefit previously.

When I used a merger move, it was taxed. The company upped my income to cover the taxes and put it as a separate line item in pay.

Actually I think you are incorrect. The way I read it is that you must be within 200 miles of a place that your new base serves- not 200 miles from your new base.
