The Holiday Inn just off the airport will sometimes give you the $80 UAL rate. It was about 50/50 for me.

Marriott App put in UAL for discount. It varies on the night and hotel if the UA rate is available. The best I have seen is the Courtyard downtown EWR for $80. Airport Marriott is normally $115-135 for UA rate + tax.

The Doubletree was cheap now they finished renovations. Looks like they are coming in at $125++

The 3 Marriott properties on Hwys 1 & 9 are typically UAL rate $99 plus taxes or thereabouts. Fairfield, Courtyard Airport, and Springhill Suites. I usually stayed at Fairfield or Springhill fur the free breakfast. Neither has a restaurant. 2 minute walk to Courtyard for food.

I usually stay at one of the Marriott properties on 1&9 as well. Mostly reasonable rates, in the $100-125 range, and over the course of the year I probably spend only about a dozen nights at one of them, so an actual crash pad is not a good deal for me.

I've stayed at the properties by Jersey Gardens Mall as well - there is a Residence, a Courtyard, an Embassy, and a Country Inn. They are newer, a bit nicer, are near the food court and a couple restaurants, and are almost always around $25-50 more expensive than the 1&9 campus, sometimes even more than the on airport Marriott.

The marriotts are great because many of them will let you cancel your reservation without penalty even outside the cancel window. I just call and tell them I’m a united pilot and my schedule changed and can I change my reservation to a different date. Then I roll it to another date and I can either cancel it or reschedule it. Most of the time they do it with no bother.

The Motel 6 offers the most authentic Newark experience. $90 to $120 per night out the door.

Does that include a guaranteed mugging, out the door?

Just wear such a low-rent layover outfit that the mugger will say: “OK Pal, you work this side of the street and I’ll take the other side.”
