Ngpa 2019
Is there anyone here who has knowledge of what attendees can expect at the upcoming conference? United is hosting the event and has a large block of time allotted for themselves, but there isn’t a whole lot of information of how the day will go. Hopefully there will be an opportunity to meet face to face with a recruiter.

What is NGPA?

Is being recruited the same as being propositioned?

A few really well dressed pilots with fabulous hair wearing skinny jeans and then about 5000 average looking regional or military pilots looking to get hired by a major airline.

I think there was some room here to make light that there are tons of "straight" folks that attend and support NGPA just as there are many fair skinned people that attend OBAP and men that attend WAI. Pilots will do what is required to get noticed and hired.
Just like the threads that get locked for political stuff...if this one derails in a direction of the goodness/badness of NGPA or its membership...it should get locked as well. |
I’m sure you guys make the same jokes about our gay ALPA pilots to their faces, right?

Everybody has something to be offended by now. Isn’t it a great time to be an American! |

I don’t think gay jokes are appropriate. Socsity as a whole, and our company, our association all agree that this is not a thing that is helpful to say.

I’m far from a bleeding heart, so for the 50% that want to hide behind “PC police” / “identitiy politics” routine, my voting interests are aligned with yours (sometimes). But I feel obligated to say that I too find it odd that a bunch of grown men who want to be treated like professionals, make unclever jokes about what some people want to do behind closed doors.
If any part of you believes in freedom from conformity and groupthink, then embrace consenting adults ability to do whatever they want, instead of drawing attention to our differences. I couldn’t care less what my coworkers do on their own time, just don’t cause me extra paperwork or stress |
I just want to know if there will be an opportunity to speak with a recruiter one on one. From what I can tell they have done away with the fast passes where you had a specific time slot. Perhaps someone on here is connected to the recruitment team?

Ngpa 2019
Went there 2 years in a row. First year was a nightmare. United didn’t have enough recruiters to meet with everyone. The line stretched across the pool deck of the resort. Anyone with a fast pass just went in front of the line. People without one stood in line for 8hrs to meet with our recruiters, baking in the sun in black suits, going on food/bathroom runs in shifts while others held their spot in line, only to get towards the front and be told “sorry folks, that’s all we’ve got time for today. Please hand in your resumes and we’ll take a look back in Denver.”
The second year went much better, as they limited the amount of tickets. Politics aside, it’s a decent career fair for the price if you can’t get an invite to an in-house expo/career fair. If they offer fast passes or time slot reservations, I highly recommend reserving one. Not sure if they do that anymore though... if you have the time off can easily take it, check it out. If not, don’t worry about it. It may just be a good opportunity to talk to a recruiter and see how you can better your resume, but that’s likely all it is now. I think most of the hiring is coming from the in-house expos which invites are sent to the top applicants. Granted- going to NGPA could give you the added points and feedback to make your application a top candidate so it can’t hurt to go.... |
Some of this is an example of why comedians won’t perform on college campuses. You can’t even crack a joke without some super sensitive person claiming that what you said is offensive. With the exception of a few really clean knock knock jokes, most humor is at the expense of another. I’m not offended or harmed by jokes about overweight, uptight, middle aged white guys. There’re funny. Crude humor is the best of all types of humor, it can just get you in trouble at work. Lighten up and enjoy laughing at others as well as yourself. Life is too short to be politically correct.

Secondly, it's widely accepted by the public(I'm assuming you are an airline pilot) and 100% settled at United that these types of comments aren't acceptable in the workplace. It's against the rules, for good reason. You are being rude, and bigoted, which is not acceptable behavior by any standard of measurement for an ALPA pilot. Your comments are hurtful to my friends here at United and I won't accept you playing as if they weren't. This isn't a grey area. People in a comedy club can leave, people at their employer can't. If you want to say bigoted stuff do it somewhere else. The constant gay bashing every time NGPA shows up on here is regrettable and embarrassing and for those of you reading this who aren't at UAL it doesn't represent our pilots or values as an organization. |

I think we need a hiring meet n greet for cat lovers..
Now, I double dog dare ya to make a “cat joke”. ;) I’m already offended just thinking about it. Let’s just agree to be all inclusive, and establish a new class: P.O.’ed Perpetually Offended. |

You may think it’s a molehill which is why I haven’t said that I think you are a bigot but it needed to be said. No place for it here. None. |

looking like a snowflake is melting. I don’t care if it’s a gay joke or any other type of joke. No need to get your panties in a wad over this stuff. Oops, I did it again.

Anyway. If you want to keep making jokes at the expense of LGBT people or defending those who do feel free. I’m just pointing out what should be patently obvious, that you shouldn’t be making gay jokes on a United forum. |

I didn’t say you were a bigot. I said that many of the things said here would easily be considered bigoted language in a workplace. This being a professional website I think we should behave appropriately, especially someone who identifies as a TK employee regularly. You were however and still are defending the tasteless language on here.

Back to useful information: United will not be meeting w/ anybody 1 on 1 at the job fair. There are no timeslots or fastpasses because they will only be doing an 'info session' talking about their hiring plans for the year.
Not really worth the money for most. |
No one is saying gay people are oppressed or that there aren’t plenty of hilarious offensive comedians (just YouTube jeselnik or burr), but what feels weird as a SWM non liberal, is that you makes jokes about your coworkers behind an anonymous identity that you wouldn’t make in the crew room.
Nothing snow-flaky about that. I wouldn’t want to come to work wondering if my coworkers want to be making fun of me, but don’t, not out of common decency, but because they don’t want to get fired... And you raise the “pc police” virtue signal and know that 50% will defend whatever unclever, unnuanced thing you’re saying. Bottom line, if some 17 year old gay kid was reading up on networking opportunities to pursue his dream about becoming an airline pilot, and he read this, what is he supposed to think? Is is it that difficult to see why your intellectual efforts could be better spent elsewhere? |
Bets on how long it'll take this thread to be locked?
