Can anyone chime in on this commute (PDX-SFO) nowadays? Is it seasonally bad? Do low ceilings in SFO cause massive headaches

When the forecast looks like flow control will be in effect (IFR arrivals or strong westerly winds), look at OAK and SJC commutes. They are not usually affected and have fewer commuters. Can Uber from either place in about an hour (two if using public transit). Pro tip: Flow control hits hardest for flights taking off around 0900ish, so if it looks likely then it’s good to go earlier or go into OAK/SJC.

Just buy some tickets. They’re like $86-120. Your stress level will be immediately better and if your wife makes more than you, you can likely afford it comfortably (and justify it).

I have always looked at my commute through duty rigs. Get paid 1 hour per 3.5 hours TAFH(ome). Was making close to $350/hr, so $100 per hour TAFH. If I could go to work 2 hours later, or get home 2 hours early by spending up to $200, it was worth it. Having a slightly longer trip that paid a bit more? worth the price of a ticket. And that is before you take the stress into account.

100%. Your commute will go from stressful to enjoyable. Just buy tickets a month ahead of time when you get your schedule.

I’m always amazed how much time people waste checking loads, taking earlier flights, waiting for the next flight because you missed the first flight, etc…

Buying tickets for your commute will cost even less than you’ll save in taxes by moving. Just buy tickets and you’ll be fine.
