PDX to SFO Commute?

I've seen the SEA to SFO thread... but didn't see anything on portland specific.

Was hoping those that know will chime in with insights. Mama thinks she can get a good job up in Portland... I'm potentially willing to do the commute to SFO (3rd year FO on the 73). How bad will commuting be? Things to look out for besides SF weather days?

Also, thinking about living across the border in Washington to save on my state income taxes at least. She'd be making her money in Portland, so she'll pay Oregon income tax regardless.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated. We currently live in base (LAX) and I'm loathe to give up that simplicity... but Mama says it's time to go... and she makes a lot more that I do, so...

No kids or schools to think about. Just two DINKs trying to make life as complicated as possible I guess.

Thanks in advance.

PACNORWEST living is fantastic and Portland is still cheaper than San Francisco. Living in WA and shopping in OR is good for taxes, but the commute across the bridges is brutal. PDX is along the Columbia River so either would work for you. Can’t speak to the commute to/from SFO.

I love living in SW Washington! Taking I-205 to the airport is not that bad. Definitely not nearly as bad as trying to get to the airport on I-5. It takes me about 25-30 minutes to get to the airport from the northwest part of the Vancouver area.

As for the commute, it is crowded. It is manageable if you pay attention. Two airlines serve SFO from PDX. United and Alaska. Southwest pulled out of the market for now. There is usually between 13-15 flights per day. They do have some banks. So sometimes you have to make the decision to choose one over the other. Coming from SFO, there is usually a late night clean up flight that departs SFO around 22:30-23:00ish.

I think it’s time to move out of your Mother’s house.

*Bump*

Can anyone chime in on this commute (PDX-SFO) nowadays? Is it seasonally bad? Do low ceilings in SFO cause massive headaches

Just buy some tickets. They’re like $86-120. Your stress level will be immediately better and if your wife makes more than you, you can likely afford it comfortably (and justify it).

100% and with UPA23 you no longer need two commute options as long as the PS tix you bought arrives 90 min or more from your trip.

Absolutely. One of the best additions in the contract and amazingly understandable in the contract without referencing 40 other paragraphs.
