Oh wah wah. You're right. He should have stood his ground, gotten the company even more eviscerated in the media, probably even more congressional hearings, all because "feelings".

Bunch of men and women acting like over sensitive boys and girls. Protecting the brand of the company is more important for us collectively than group hugs. Dao may have been acting combatively, but he ended up looking like he was in a UFC match on a jet with our colors. That reflected on us. And Oscar didn't throw us under the bus. He threw the industry's outdated policies under the bus.

I too hate the social justice warrior, social media BS game. But that's what it is. Don't hate the player. Learn to deal with reality.

Obviously the guy is an ******* to trade drugs for sex, but what does that have to do with this event 12 years later.

The article makes him out to be a saint, maybe a little history of his character would have filled out the story. Maybe not.

Part of the “beating up” was self induced, he knew what he was doing.

ZERO sympathy for this unbalanced clown. Too bad he got a nice payday for his stupidity.

Yeah. My favorite part: he was flying back to open a clinic to serve the troops. We're only now hearing about this? OK.

His stupidity? Already on a plane when denied boarding due to staffing issues at the regional level. If only United had empowered employees to (on occasion) offer more than the $800 voucher for taking a later flight. Dao would have never happened if the offer was $2,000 in United voucher credit.

As an airline customer, I really don’t care if your 6am doesn’t have a crew. As a paying customer I care about my today, not the company’s tomorrow. And if you’re gonna deny that travel today, you better pay up some good travel credit.

But he had important/noble work to perform.

Did it say somewhere that that Dr. (dinky) Dau would have taken $2000?

Apologies if I missed that part.

If not him, someone else would have. They had already gotten 2 others to volunteer off on current amount. Upping the offer would have found the last pax to volunteer off.

In a world where you're so certain that would have happened, sure...

He had 18 pending lawsuits at the time of this incident. Dao was looking for his nest egg when this opportunity dropped in his lap. This was his finest acting. It took smashing his own face on an armrest and spitting in the cops face to get dragged off bloody like that. Pathetic he is edging for a few more seconds in the spotlight.

Everyone has their price. You just have to find the point where an addition person on that flight would voluntarily get up.

Put it this way, how much did the incident with Dr. Dao cost? Actual costs to him and bad publicity causing people to not book with United. Yes, it is hindsight at that point, but a track record built up for future events.

What would it have taken? A few more hundred dollars? A couple of thousand more dollars? Certainly they would have reached a price for one passenger at less than say a free pass for a lifetime. (I am being silly, intentionally.)
