I’ve had this very thing happen. I asked the “senior” pilot if he could also list as a non-rev. He said he tried but it didn’t work. Whatever. He was on “the list.” We both got on in the jumpseats.

Had another time, (not on UAL but on DAL), where I was the only JS listed. I get to the gate to check in and gate agent told me there was already a JS checked in. He was deadheading but since they were trying to get one more passenger on, he asked him if he would take the JS instead. He happen to be standing next to me so I asked if he could take his seat instead so that I could get the JS. He literally shrugged, took the Jumpseat pass the gate agent was holding out to him and walked down the jetway. Told him thanks as he walked away. Don’t know if he was on the list since I didn’t get his name but I doubt it since he was young.

Sorry that happened to you on us, dude shouldn't be giving up his company paid seat for the JS. Not sure how long ago this was, but if you haven't already, please provide the info to your JS committee. This stuff needs to be relayed to our guys so the individual in question can be educated on the error of his ways.

I had an AA pilot do this for me years ago...and I'm United! He listed and got called for a seat in the cabin on the last flight home out of ORD. So I'm rolling through the jetbridge door last minute with the CSR... and the glares I got from the AA FA who was now staying the night in the terminal!! I thought she was gonna whoop my arse. :)

I have never forgotten. I always do what I can. Whether it's giving up the JS for a seat in the cabin or yes...MY SEAT IN THE CABIN FOR A JS! :0 It can be done in a way that doesn't hose a junior pilot. Most CSR's will agree to wait until last minute to make sure nobody needs the JS. If not. Fine. Just give me the cabin seat and screw our fellow employee.

I had literally the exact same thing happen to me on Delta. As a bonus, the gate agent then offered the Delta pilot formerly on a paid seat now on the cockpit JS the FA JS since it was open and would have gotten me on the cockpit. He mumbled something about flying to Europe later and went down the jet bridge. It was a 45 minute flight from Melbourne FL to ATL. Total douche move. I crumbled up my now useless Jumpseat pass and went over to AA and had them bend over backward to get me on a flight that was fully boarded.

If that was my flight I would have told him to make it work because that’s the only way he’s getting on. What a douche.

Delta won't let you list for non rev and JS. One or the other.

Just to be clear, that was a Delta flight.


I hear that it’s the same for AA. I’ve been told that is big no-no over there. Not sure why. For some reason, it seems like UAL is the only one who does this.


Luckily, the other jumpseater who was also listed, didn’t show up. So I got the 2nd JS and got to share the flight deck with him. He would’ve gotten a seat in the back, by the way. In conversation with him during the flight, he says he always rides the JS if he can. Whatever...lol

Ya but that wasn't the case. One of our pilots gave up his POSITIVE SPACE deadhead seat (major foul) to get on the jumpseat because a gate agent wanted to get more people onboard. Dude should have kept his paid seat and then FXLAX would have had no issues getting on the the flight.

Yes sorry, I should have said, I'm a DAL guy...I read APC via the "new post" link, so sometimes I end up on other airline forums. As a DAL guy, it's embarrassing that this happen on us. Honestly, if I were the Captain and I heard of this happening, I would correct this...guys should not be giving up positive space seats.

Delta goes by time of check-in, so if you list, you’re getting on. So if you list for a seat in the back because someone already has the jumpseat, and you don’t get a seat in the back, who gets the jumpseat if the guy that lists for it doesn’t show up? Since it time of check-in and you can’t even list, do they go by seniority?
