Yikes. Somewhat similar to our 67 that diverted into BOG at night and was down to battery power.

I also fly all of my approaches at flaps 15 just in case I lose an engine

Poor example. The feds had to sign off on our “turn off the apu and take your chances” protocol. Is that what happened with the flap settings? Of course not. Perhaps you don’t fly the guppy or understand how razor thin our etops safety margins are. This was nothing more than bean counters finding a way to cut cost at the expense of safety. Sure it’s legal, but after coming from a fleet that had an hmg, rat, and stby nav, I’ll keep what few tools I have available to me at the ready.

Even that’s not a real guarantee. Continental had a 757 with the APU running, due to an MEL’d main generator, and when the other generator failed inflight the APU flamed out when the load shifted. The HDG didn’t come online and it turned into a giant ******* show in a hurry. The Captain had his hands full to say the least.

A highly degraded electrical system, at night, over water, and diverting to an airport in mountainous terrain. There is more that story as to why it turned into a **** show, but a public forum isn’t the place for that. The captain definitely earned his pay that night.

yup. Without giving too much detail, suffice it to say that the cheapest outsourced maintenance will bite ya!

Perhaps you should go back to that fleet if you feel the margins are that thin.

It’s an example of hyperbole to illuminate a myriad of ways (Max power takeoffs, no flaps 1, 10 knot tailwinds, no single engine taxi) that people choose to operate under the blanket of “safety” that make them feel better but may or may not have any rational basis borne out by statistics. You do you.

wrong. I hear TK is hiring management folks. You’d fit in beautifully.

yep. I alluded to it in an earlier post. But without question, the safe handling of that situation was heroic.
