Default Deadhead and commuting question

New-ish hire here. I read both the "commuter policy" and deadhead deviation rules in the UPA but I have questions (former military, so no 121 experience):
My assigned base is LAX. Hypothetically, if a trip (as a lineholder) starts with Deadhead, let's say to Seattle, the company will DH me from LAX to Seattle, but I still have to commute (e.g. jumpseat/standby) from my home of record to LAX, right? By the way, neither United nor United Express have direct flights from my home of record to LAX (but there are 6-7 direct flights using other airlines, which is how I'm commuting. It's a short 1 hour flight).

Thanks in advance.

You need two options to either place per the company commuting policy. If you don’t intend to take the scheduled DH, then you must declare a fake. You then are essentially “commuting” to SEA and require two options as per the UPA commuter clause, with the caveat that you can book a PS ticket on UAL if there are seats available.

Thanks for the reply. What would the "scheduled DH" be in the above example? 2 legs from Home of Record to LAX and a third leg to SEA?

Like my original post said, I have 6 or 7 options (direct flights) from my home of record to LAX, but neither is UAL/UAL Express.

DH deviation takes the place of the scheduled LAX-SEA DH. You can then book a PS ticket directly from your HOR to SEA and bypass LAX completely. Same goes if trip ends with a DH. Caveat as Duvie said is that now you are responsible for getting to SEA and need two options even with your PS.

The scheduled DH is your original DH from LAX to SEA. You may declare that segment “fake”. This basically means it will show up on your schedule for pay credit but you aren’t intending to use it for actual travel. Then you may schedule PS travel from your home of record to SEA by whatever routing available.

If other airline options between your home & LAX make that routing preferable to you, just leave your trip as is, get to LAX on your own, & pick up your DH from there.

btw this is a great example of what your mentor should be answering. If not you can also send PDR. Always be mindful of the advice given on anonymous message boards.

I think the mentor program has been struggling to keep up with the pace of hiring. None of the folks that I have helped recently have been contacted or assigned an ALPA mentor...

What are the flights available from your home to sea? You can go off line with a fake dh and just Jumpseat to Seattle, just allow two flights to get there before the showtime in Seattle. If there are ual flights you can PS to sea, just allow 2 flights. I’m not sure how that works with a connection, a pdr would be your best way to get an answer. Do you need 2 flights for each leg?
