the fact that so many are upset about this tells me many of you needs to step out for some fresh air.. if ALPA or the company had a problem with it, they would let him know.. move on with your lives.

1) Achieving the rank of Captain is to be admired. Many never bid it because they aren’t the best leaders/aviators, or perhaps they just want to stay senior. The training is challenging, and the job requires a skill set that is not for everyone.

2) It isn’t “legendary”. It’s something to be proud of and is admirable, but legendary is over the top.

First, it’s a job, not a rank.

Second, everyone hired here is capable of doing it. Some better than others. It carries a lot of responsibility. Some have no interest in it. Some cannot wait to sew on the stripe. But it inspires no more admiration as an achievement than basic aircraft qual.

Just as the blase intellectuals must be entertained and divided amongst themselves with absurd or inconsequential concepts, so must the social media consumer be pacified with inviting controversy at his level. If this is not done these hollow heads will become vessels of opposition purely for their own entertainment.

If you’ve ever spent any time in the school house you’d understand the folly of your statement that “everyone hired is capable” Every single airline has people who can’t cut it and never upgrade. “Seat lock” is a term applied to the “special” pilots. Again, I’m not saying it deserves a parade, but becoming a Captain isn’t a guarantee once your number is up, either.

And if you’ve ever spent anytime at the schoolhouse, you’d know the program failure rate is pretty darn low. “Can’t cut it” implies there is something magical inherent to moving a plane full of people between airports. Some are better at it than others. Somehow, we’ve operated just fine with some pretty marginal peeps in the left seat.

Don’t confuse me with the rest of the guys bent out of shape over this guy. I couldn’t care less what people do on social media. My comment is about the reference to mainline Captain rank being considered a legend status. It’s a hell of an accomplishment to upgrade at a legacy, but legends we most certainly are not.

Yes we have. But most of them who needed special attention were scabs. And the company moved heaven and earth to get them through. Not sure if our current group of pilots will be afforded the same courtesy. Hell, American even has a term for it. Up or out. It’s in place to root out the weak links. I think we’ve beat this to death. Peace.
