To the op if you really feel embarrassed by the culture at your job, I’d go some place where you are truly appreciated.

The same way that I’m not special when I’m booked on a ticket that puts me in boarding group 3. Pre boarding in that circumstance is 100% at the whim of the gate agent. I think it’s ridiculous but it isn’t a policy change, it’s a gate agent following the policy that’s been in effect all along. This is pretty simple actually. If you guys have a problem with your DH boarding priority, take it up with your union. If you don’t have a union, vote one in.

Well that was my point. No need for all that, just go to a culture where you’re already appreciated. There’s no need to form a union for common courtesy from gate agents.

Ha, well apparently there is a reason. It is in our contract for the exact reason. Many gate agents do not like pilots. At Continental we did not have any language that allowed pre boarding. We were never allowed on before paying passengers.

I’ll say it one more time because it doesn’t seem to be sinking in. As a senior captain at UAL if I’m boarding group 3, I am often not allowed to pre board.

A union will not change the “common courtesy” of gate agents. It’ll force the company to make your DH boarding priority 1 and allow for pre boarding. Completely bypassing the whims of a gate agent all together.

Don’t expect special treatment from gate agents at UAL, I don’t. It’s completely hit or miss.

A deadheading Pilot in uniform shall be permitted to board the aircraft as if he were a working crewmember once the minimum number of flight attendants are on board or anytime thereafter, unless prohibited by government regulations. Other deadheading pilots may board at any time during the passenger boarding process. A deadheading Pilot must, prior to boarding, check in and have his boarding pass scanned.

Hoss. It's not about being special, it's about the contract. I always board group 1. Gives me a chance to get settled and go say hello to the crew. I don't care what the card says. And yes, I'll argue the point and show my ass if need be. Haven't had to do that since the early days of the merger in Houston and Newark, tho.

The UPA doesn't apply to express pilots.

As mentioned UAX ain’t covered under our CBA. Also self booked business PS isn’t a dead head thus boarding group 3.

Plain and simple the OP didn’t understand that he’s not entitled to pre board. Doing so in his circumstance is a privilege not a right. No policy change, like it or not it’s simply policy enforcement. A good CSA isn’t going to enforce it, and you know the rest of the story.

During COVID, when we returned to First Class DH, did the company put something out telling us to DH out of uniform if able? I seem to remember that, but not sure if it was official policy.

Commuting is a choice. Just like being on reserve, right?
