Question Relative Seniority: SWA vs. UAL

As a new hire with Southwest today, my relative seniority based on retirements at Southwest would be as follows...

5 Years
88%

10 Years
67%

15 Years
41%

20 Years
19%

25 Years
7%

30 Years
1%

How would seniority progression look like comparatively to a new hire at United with ~30 years remaining? I'm heavily comparing the two for seniority comparison / progression opportunity as I have CJOs with both carriers and the opportunity to live in base with both.

Is that accurate? I’m at 8.5 years and 62% system seniority.

That’s according to MySeniority.com based on retirements and zero growth. Seems accurate.

Comparing seniority at SWA vs a legacy won’t tell you much, unless you are comparing system seniority at particular milestones.. NB CA, WB FO, WB CA, etc.

At some domiciles, NB CA can be held in a year. I don’t think that’s possible at SWA.

Not so sure about relative seniority but United has 500 planes on order and hiring 8,000 pilots in the next 4-5 years. Also unfilled Captain and widebody FO bids.

Why is “relative” seniority so important when the fleets aren’t relatively the same?

Does this United base have widebody flying? If so with 30 years left you’ll be able to be a Captain on every fleet time United currently has. Chances are you can upgrade in 18-36 months on the 73 also… can’t do anything except a 737 at SWA and a FO for around a decade or so.

Man oh man with the fed up and recession looming, I’m pretty darn lukewarm on all that happening in the next 4-5 years.

Exactly this. I cringe every time I read one of these SWA or Big 3 threads. Absolutely cringe-worthy. The choice is so obvious especially if the commute or no commute factor is the same.

Go to United.

Relative seniority at United, even if identical to SWA, would allow you to have better overall seniority in NB seats. With retirements + growth, you'll have more options at United. SWA isn't meeting their hiring goals and it's going to slow down any planned fleet growth. Hell, they're having major problems rebuilding their pre-COVID network. Everyone is dealing with mini meltdowns, but SWA's operation is in for turbulence right now.
