You’re going to be junior the first couple of years in whatever seat you bid so bidding Captain at least pays you for the weekend work. After a couple of years you can bid to WB fo and get paid while having some seniority. Year one FO pays $116 regardless of equipment. Year one Captain almost triples that…

You don’t stay junior very long in a NB FO seat. Most categories you can hold a line within a month or two, and be as much as 20-30% by two years. A CA seat will be on weekend reserve basically that whole 2 years. It’s a HUGE difference in money, but it’s also a big QOL difference. To each their own…

That is what we thought when new hires were getting 777/787FO as their original assignment, then 6 months later they were holding a line!!

So, that which all of us old dudes experienced throughout our career does not have much relevance to what the new hires are experiencing today. Would I imagine that they will be on reserve for the full two years? yes I would, but I wouldn't put any money on it.
