It was supposedly under consideration before they decided on LAS. What has changed in less than 2yrs that would now make PHX more feasible for the company to make it a base (hub?) than it did in 2022?

Crew resources update today actually spells out what they look for. Surprisingly transparent.

Bottom of the Nov 1 Crew Resources Update.

I still don't see the company opening a PHX base anytime soon (would love to be wrong) because it would cannibalize so many pilots from LAS, especially if the pairings were better, i.e. most trips did not have ANF.

70% of the peope I fly with commute out of PHX to LAS. I really dont understand how it isn't in everyones best interest to open PHX and let LAS slowly dwindle down to the few guys who actually live there.
The 25 year widebody FOs are not going to leave SFO and LAX so that they can drive to work and fly the worst narrow body trips in the system.

I think we should just have the 73 be all satellite bases: CLE, MCO,LAS, PHX, MSY, BNA, ATL, DFW, CVG, BOS, SEA, ORF and MSP. Think we could set a new industry standard. BOOOOM!

I mean if some jerk chose to live in a high income tax hub city just to not commute.......well his bad decision shouldn't be my Problem dang it. Go fly the Bus or a widebody.
I shouldn't have to switch airlines just to not commute.

Bad decision? I did it and it’s been the best decision of my career.

Yes it's kind of my poor attempt at satire.
I want to please as much of the pilot group as we can, but when it comes to the amount of food at satellite bases: it's a zero sum game with their colleagues at the hubs.......not everyone gets this. The block hours out of satellites don't just come out of nowhere.

As someone has said, it's not going to be the 20 year widebody FO's. It's a lot of post pandemic hires, where presumably (excluding Envoy, PSA, Piedmontflow flows) they would have had thier choice of AA or any other place with a domecile there.......

Commuting and domecile location........ these are fairly easy things to discover it's not as if this is the 15th century and we don't know about the shape of the earth.

I really don't understand why they put bases where the most flying is, rather than where we prefer to live.......🤪🤪

There's a new Crew Resources sheriff in town and she's obviously running the operation quite a bit more smoothly and efficiently. What I read her saying in between the lines in the update was that any further NB bases are absolutely DOA. MCO + TPA has been a win, LAS at best a draw, and none of the other candidates have anywhere near enough flying to justify.

I read it the same way. She's been a breath of fresh air, informative and to the point. Sometimes I thought Zach was paid by the word for his updates.

To be quite honest, they are DOA because of reserve coverage..... Outstation bases have a lower reserve utilization (harder to use reserves to bail themselves out)....

Agree. Big picture is the "captain crisis" is over, and that's all the new bases were even about to begin with....enticing people to upgrade.

Yup, the flying is there to support the outstation base… But the company will only do it with single digit percentage amount of reserves in said base. They don’t want reserve pilots sitting at home collecting paychecks at outstations that they have a hard time activating….

Hence why in base reserve at a outstation is the best job…

Suffice to say FM and her team have done an exceedingly effective job of minimizing pilot credit time expenditure during her tenure. She has a financial analysis/accounting background, so it's no surprise.
