you should then apply at least the standard deduction of $31.5K, making line 15, taxable income, $248.5K.

tax on this amount is $45.3K, before any credits (eg child tax credit). I think this is where you made your mistake. Use the 2025 tax tables for MFJ. Taxable income x .24, then subtract $14.3k for your actual tax, then apply your credits (phased out by income)

1040 is not super complicated, you can ball park it by hand in about 5 mins
Ok, so I looked over the 1040 that taxact.com filled in for me. Everything pretty much tracks with what you said and my FEDERAL tax due is $38k. But when I include Box 4, 6, and 17 which is Social Security tax, Medicare tax, and State tax, the total comes to $67k. Anybody got a barf bag handy? Think I’m feeling sick to the stomach.

Welcome to being a top 10% W2 wage earner.

Just wait until it breaks 100k. I'm well over that with all income taxes (67k in FED tax not counting SS/Medicare, plus another $24k to the state. And that's lower than last year because the SALT limit went from $10k to $40k

That sounds about right, since you're including Federal, SS, Medicare and State income Taxes. It's easier to discuss taxes with others without lumping them all together like that, but I digress.

Add in sales tax (if applicable) on your spending if you want to hit 6 figures.

Then, if you want to get REAL crazy, estimate how much more you spent at POS due to tarrifs.

Only $67k? Those are rookie numbers. You are going to have to pump those numbers way up in this business.

Im trying to understand exactly what you are saying.

You paid $67 K in taxes? ( like already taken out of paycheck of both you and your wife …like box 2 combined for the both of you?)

Or you owe an additional $67 K after filing?

Given your high combined income in 2025……..$67 K in combined tax withheld may be disappointing but it sure isn’t surprising

I don’t know what kind of refunds y’all are getting with those numbers, but if they’re large, you might want to revisit your W4…

The original poster seems to be including State and FICA taxes. C’est la vie…

That new SALT deduction is CLUTCH!!! When it phases out in a couple of years, I’m back to grumbling….
