I'd live on Saipan and commute over. Saipan is a poorer island but much preatier IMHO.

Hi everyone....
SO....not much threading on crashpads here in GUM...if there is, please let me know the appropriate search, because I found none as of recent. Saipan commute...hmm...sounds interesting. What are the non-married or "not moving the family" folks working out there? In the interest of new junior dudes/dude-ets hitting GUM, is there decent availability for crash pads in decent areas in GUM...maybe each class works out a new pad for themselves, etc? I'm all for heading out there, and bidding back to the states when I can, and if that's a year, cool. Adventure...island flying...good enough for me. Being stationed in Key West for 5 years has made me very happy to live in a place where I can drink with buds, or disappear into another island/key for a weekend. But that's just me. But, in the interest of knowing how best to utilize our 1100/mo allowance, is there enough "availability" of decent crashpads out there to support the effort if you don't want to move? Surely there is? I'm hoping.... Otherwise, looking into surrounding islands and communting sounds like a possibility.....or is it too sketchy to get on a plane? Thanks for all of this info on this page. Very informative....and for those that have issue with it, God bless our right to choose, to stay in your current non-flying job in a cubicle as a contractor worrying about next year's funding, your fast-food management position, your really cool PM position where you are fused to your crackberry 24/7, or whatever it is you decide until it's right for you. As a two-time "loser" (furloughed guy), I have had my YEARS of job searching outside the business, and have done well, moving on to the next non-flying opportunity when I'm ready to eat a gun because of all the corporate backstabbing and political BS, and one thing is for sure fellow aviators.....the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence....the dog just ****s in different parts of the yard. Parking Break - Set; Checklist - Complete; Where are we drinking? Peace. |
Awesome thread. Many funny comments and side discussions.
For those furloughees worried about getting 'stuck' with Guam, I doubt that anyone going there will do it involuntarily. It's not for me but I'm sure that there are more than a few who will find it an enjoyable place to be. |
It's definitely a love/hate place. I love going to Guam, but I wouldn't want to live there long-term. Everything is expensive and it's hotter and more humid than say Hawaii. Utilities are very expensive too. The economy exists due to the military and tourists from Asia.
I have several life long friends who live there. The Guam people are very Americanized and like us Mainlanders. Their wages are low and their quality of life is something I'd call second world. Like many cultures, several generations live under one roof. Because you're on an island and were on an island yesterday and will be on an island tomorrow, the local lifestyle is slow and laidback. If you're a surfer don't go because the coral reef that surrounds the island makes it virtually impossible to surf. Scuba diving is supposedly terrific in Guam. There's a sunken German WW I ship and a sunken Japanese WW II ship within feet of each other off the west coast. If you think it would advance your career being based there then go for it. If you love it you could stay. If you don't love it then you know you only have 18-36 months to escape. And we all know how fast time flies. Best wishes! |
Would think with a system bid in January and "hiring" 24 a month to get the 200 (June 2012) you could get off the island by spring 2012. Or quit and wait for mother UAL to recall. Thats my plan.

Best wishes! what a kook, The surf is world class, three of the best surf breaks are unbelievable, fast ,hollow and gnarly, but very surf-able. Very local, be respectful and blend in, take off when you can , NO FEAR. Boat Basin, Rick's reef and Merizo, there are more, but those are awesome waves. ...and the WW1 and WW2 ships are in Apra Harbour, about a 200 yd swim from the commercial port side, man you do NOT know what you are talking about...???!!! How do I know? I lived there 13 years, taught SCUBA there for 10 yrs, and was a US Navy Deep Sea diver based there for 4 yrs. and the second world comment, maybe true in parts of the south, but there are average earners. normal life, just on an Island. |

Guam is such a dump. After one week, you have experience every part of the island. Scuba diving is great when you've seen it the first time. How many times are you going to dive the same freakin spot?! Place is boring. The military is being brought by the shiploads. Nothing against the military, ( I was before), but a dinky little island with thousands of military is not my cup of tea. And what a marketing scam that the airlines have that are serving Asians. They make Guam look like an oasis, when it's nothing but. There is NOTHING to do there and you are trapped. Be glad you are a pilot and can fly the heck out of there when you can. Please do not bring your family there and trap them.
