You think we are paranoid? Buddy... you have no idea. The company was videoing/recording our conversations in ops for years before we found out. Here is a novel idea. Don't do anything illegal at work and you won't have to worry about videos. . And trust me, they WILL use the iPads to track our movements, compare it to sick list usage etc. If you work for United, and you AREN'T paranoid, you are stupid. Now I've got to carry another iPad. I have my own, which I will continue to use, so now I'm going to be dragging around 2 of them. And what information does it give me that I don't already have? What happens if I lose it? Break it? You think the company is going to pat me on the head and say "That's ok, we'll just get you another one?" HELL no they won't. It will come out of my paycheck! Don't be such a Richard Cranium. |
I think the IPad haters think the company should take care of the employees first and foremost by giving us a decent contract, and then worry about ipads and paint. After the last decade and all we've been through, I get it. However, I flew a corporate gig during my 1st furlough that used efb's that were fairly large and cumbersome compared to the IPad. They still ROCKED! When I went back to UAL and had to carry a flight bag and do Jepp revisions, I wanted to shoot myself.
I am impressed that the company is willing to get with the 21st century and provide a sleek, light efb platform. It's about f-ing time. And, if it saves the company money in the long run, that may help our plight for a real pay-scale. Just my opinion, FWIW. Will we be able to view FOM's and AFM's on the IPads too? Or just Jepp charts? |

I think the unions should direct that no pilot sign for an iPad until "safety-related issues are worked out regarding the training and implementation of this technology." Let them sit in a warehouse and let the company suffer the negative publicity of not thinking the issue through, just like their train-by-bulletin and staff-by-junior man practices. I agree that doing revisions is about the most pointless exercise out there, but what is more frustrating is knowing every paycheck is a lot less than it ought to be. It feels like I'm paying the company each month. They made a half billion dollars. They're upgrading the fleet and refurbishing terminals at a price of nearly two billion. But they can't discuss our scheduling section with us in a rational way? IPads are a welcome relief. So is a little sunshine to a hostage, but they're still a hostage. |

Just because one flies the Bro doesn't mean one don't have SJS. You next post seems to indicate that you "get it", so I will retract the SJS. Here's the thing though... As an EMB-120 FO, who is new to the airline side of the industry (sounds like you flew corporate), you should be careful making statements about what kind of attitudes the guys with the experience should have. Since there isn't a pilot on the property right now with less than about 12 years, everyone that was leaving a comment has experience. I wouldn't go over to the corporate section and start spouting off to those folks about what their attitude should be, as I have very limited corporate experience. Another correction to your assessment. The iPad is nothing but an inconvenience for me without Wifi installed in the airplane. Right now, with Shipsets, I have nothing that I need to carry. It will come out of my paycheck! Paperless is all fine and good, but how hard is it for me to open up a book and find a chart? Like I said in the first post, if they put Wifi in all the jets, then that is a completely different story. If I had access to real time weather, moving map taxi charts, etc. etc., then THAT would make it a very valuable resource. But we don't, and apparently aren't going to considering they just announced they are going to spend $500 million in cabin upgrades, and WIFI on the UAL airplanes that don't have it wasn't in the announcement. Right about now you are rolling your eyes and thinking you know how I should feel. Put another 20 years in and then come talk to me. You'll see. In the meantime, you can keep your snotty comments to the regional board. They might go over better there. No offense was intended, and I'm sorry if you feel that way. But I really do think you will see a QOL enhancement once these are implemented. Clearly you have much more 121 experience than I do, but I don't really see what that has to do with using iPads as EFBs. I've worked in a department that used them, therefore I have experience with how useful they are in the cockpit. It seems like a win-win for you and your company, but apparently you don't feel that way. Once this does go through (or I guess, if it does...), I would be interested to see how you feel about it after you've had some time to transition over. Anyway, I'm out... |

A little under three years. It was a CJ3 with ProLine 21 (with charts displayed on the IFIS), and included the use of iPads. Though we implemented the iPads during the last year I was there, and I had about 12 months of using it as a backup for our charts and manuals. This was all part 91.
