It's an ever downward cycle and when the majors don't need you, they'll throw you away and you'll be out on the street... ask the former Independence Air pilots. Seniority is nice and I'm sure your life right now is "comfortable" but that comfort isn't nearly as secure as you think... ask the former Comair pilots. I've never heard of a regional pilot who believed they made the right move by staying at a regional unless they were very old or had no other options.

Life at a major will be tough at first... if you've got kids (expensive) and you don't work (significantly reduced income) it'll be tough at first. There's no guarantee against furlough at UAL, though at this point in the cycle I find it highly unlikely. Notice how many have said stay at the regional? The reality is you have no choice.

X,

I knew when I posted this I was going to get a biased opinion by the major pilots. I know how most of you feel about the regionals...but that is Ok I just really wanted to hear about the realities of the situation. I appreciate all the advice.

www.AngryPilotWife.com says "take the job!" I got a feeling she's gonna write about your situation this weekend...while I watch the game. Good luck and congratulations to you both. There are far worse problems to have. Cheers...H

Oh No... do I too, become an "Angry Pilot Wife" if he takes the job? Maybe he better not :)

Pilot's Wife, read between those lines. You have your answer, and his. It sounds like you're tired of hearing that too and hearing it from him. Go kick his butt out of bed and tell him to accept. We expect to hear that he has done this by the end of the day. After he's out on the line tell us his name and we can rag him with "geez, why in the world did you leave that great regional job for this?!" :)

And now for the "signs and wonders" argument.

A farmer realized a rain of biblical proportions was going to cause a flood. The state even called up the National Guard. The farmer prayed that he would be saved from the flood. The Army came by and said hop into the truck, we're evacuating you. Farmer said no God will save me. The Navy came by in a boat and said climb aboard, we're evacuating you. Farmer said no God will save me. The Air Force came by in a helicopter and said get in the basket, we're evacuating you. Farmer said no God will save me. Farmer drowns. In heaven farmer asks God why didn't you save me? God says what else could I do? I sent the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force and you turned them all down!

Husband wanted to fly for UAL and, now five years later, out of the blue, with no further effort on his part, he gets an job offer, like a lightening bolt. If you are looking for a sign, I don't think I've heard of a better one.

^*^*^ HEYAS ^*^*^

English & simply put....There's NOT too many other signs to make this more clear than how APC laid it out.

Take it, or at the very least, "accept" it for him.

Best of luck to you both.

I believe I speak for many thousands when I say: if he doesn't want his spot, I'd be happy to take it for him. ;)

United is losing a pilot every 18 hours so even with United furloughed coming back there will be movement. If it turns out he doesn't like it here, he will get a 737 type rating just for going thru the training.

You are so correct. Seniority number is EVERYTHING. Guys 500 numbers above me (about 6 months) upgraded to the left seat in 5 years and have been there ever since. Me, I upgraded at 5 years, got bumped. Upgraded at 10 years, got bumped. Now, sitting at 16 years waiting to upgrade. What a difference a few hundred numbers make. Tell your husband to RUN, not walk, to get a class date.

Although if you don't mind a 1:45 drive to work, there are still lots of affordable places to live if you're based in SFO.

Where? I'm serious. I'm from the Bay Area. Where can you afford within 2 hours in commute traffic. Maybe there's somewhere I don't know.
