757s to 737s

Looks like a lot of folks will be exercising displacement rights in the next two years.

We took delivery of another Boeing 737-900ER on Thursday, our 14th of 24 new 737s we’ll receive from Boeing this year. It is aircraft no. 478. As EVP and Chief Financial Officer John Rainey noted in our second-quarter earnings call with analysts and the media, “For each Boeing 757-200 that we replace with a new 737-900ER, we project more than a $2 million benefit annually. We plan to retire 73 domestic 757-200s by the end of 2015 and replace them with new 737-900ERs.

The fascination Jeff has with light twins never ceases to amaze.

The 737-900 replacing a 757? pure blaspheme! The 737 is not even close to matching the performance of a 757. :D

I'm sure they are working on it.

FWIW, the current Boeing advertised range of a MAX 9 is 500nm less than a winglet equipped 757-200 so something will have to improve in the interim unless co-worker Jeff decides "close enough" is good enough for the world's leading airline (see: CDG-IAD via 757).

Same thing at Delta:

I see a change in equipment bidding strategy happening soon. I will hate to be the poor sucker stuck at the bottom on reserve for years to come just for the glory of a fourth stripe. The B757 is fairly senior through out the sUAL system on both seats, these guys will have to bump somewhere.

Close enough is good enough will have us with a B737 mini hub in Gander or a 500 miles swimming to EWR.
Even an arrogant lawyer can see that this will be a logistic nightmare.

Only 15 L-UAL 757s will be left when it is all said and done. It is cheaper to scrap them vice refurbish. Also, 739s are cheaper in the eyes of the beholder to operate them than the old 757s in our current and planned markets.
