Calm down Francis....I mean Winston...or maybe Nigel? It's a great point that SFO isn't the best place to host anything. DenverTK, Chicago, or IAH training center would have made much more sense for location. However, I wholeheartedly agree....if you want the job, just show up and don't complain about the location.

A military recruiting event which isn't too close to many military installations with pilots.
Is this a way to boost traffic to SFO in the off season? SFO is close to Travis AFB and not much else in terms of military pilots. It would be much better event in GA or TX or even NY/NJ where there is a lot more military traffic. Well, good to see they are helping recruit more military. Maybe this is an outreach primarily from the SFO Chief pilots office. I hope there would be another one for the East Coast and another one for Central US. Military guys don't get Non rev privileges like their regional brethren where they can Jumpseat from one coast to another. Good luck all. (Not you personally Z but the standard applicant) You're chasing a multi-million dollar career. If you can't get off your ass and go to them, and expect an employer to come to you.... You're going to be very bored and broke for a long time. Take a look at what places like Hawaiian make you go through. SWA made guys pay for their own type until they couldn't get away with that anymore, etc. UAL is holding a Veteran specific event at a certain place/time. Show up or not, but expect to be called after the ones that do.

Holy jumping to conclusions Batman! You don't know a thing about the poster from his/herpost....especially his/her generational affiliation. Zoomie's point is a good one. Geographically/Demographically there are better places for a company serious about recruiting military talent to pan for gold. If Apple were to try a major recruiting event in my home town (2,000 relatively tech unsay you folks strong), you might hear similar criticisms.
My .02 cents Good luck to everyone that makes the trek, I'd like to see UAL pick up every vet there. |
Grumble, IAHTK is out. They've turned it back into a raquetball court.

Plenty of mil applicants within an easy drive besides Travis:
Beale Reno Fallon Sacramento (USCG and USAR) Moffett LeMoore Fresno Everything around San Diego This may not be like doing an event in Dallas or San Antonio, but it's not like doing it Great Falls. San Diego would have made more sense. Also, a maintenance facility as a good reason to host a pilot hiring fair? It's also a pilot hub, but I don't know how excited I would be to tour a maintenance facility unless I were a maintenance guy. Again, We'll have to agree to disagree. This has nothing to do with a generational attitude of entitlement. I'm already with United. This smells like merely a PR event. If it gets some mil applicants hired, I'm all for it. I'd love to see more military here. However, I also know how many military want a job here and out of a few hundred that show up and spend a grand or more to come out to SFO, I'd like to find out how many get an interview. Would I do it if I were loking for a job? Yes, I would. The point in my original post is that SFO isn't exactly the center of military aviation by any means..., that is all. It does make sense to try and recruit local citizens of where growth is located, but it would make sense more as an open hiring fair and schedule a military event in a higher concentration of military aviation. |

You're kidding right? What PR points is the company winning here? What news outlet is this being published in? Lemoore alone could fill a years worth of hiring classes, and is the USN's master jet base for the west coast. Fallon is home to NSAWC (or NADS, whatever it's called now) and encompasses the weapons school house for every USN flying thing, every community but the C-2 and E-6. Ill add to Galaxy's list: March AFB Edwards AFB Pt. Mugu Klamath Falls China Lake Portland Fairchild AFB 29 Palms Vandenburg Yuma Tucson Phoenix Hill AFB Whidbey Island You're right, San Fran isnt exactly a flag waiving bastion of American military pride (maybe we could rent a location at UC Berekly)... Seems to me it is a fantastic central location for all these west coasters though. Maybe the company will repeat the process at Dulles for those on the other end. I'm proud they're doing this at all. |

And despite what the media may have told you about the Bay Area as of late: when I look out across Memorial Stadium, 99% of us stand, take off our hats, and proudly sing our National Anthem. |
Let's move it to Guam. That's were the Heavy Pilots are located that are looking for jobs. And, they can stay right there in The Warmth of Paradise.

A note for the the "enlisted veteran" - don't assume you have to be an "officer and gentleman" for this program. Over the years United has hired enlisted veterans from WWII, Korean, Vietnam and the current Middle-East conflicts. Don't eliminate yourself - let United make that determinations. In some cases you will likely be as qualified or better qualified than the O&G group.
Given the fact that the guy running pilot hiring at UA is himself an enlisted veteran, I am quite confident your service would be viewed upon favorably!!! |
Whelp, I'm grateful for the opportunity to attend and hopeful that I'll get an invite for day two. SFO..weather's great, food is good (love me a good carne asada burrito) and where it ain't my first choice of places to live I always enjoy visiting there. As for maintenance facility...shoot, that's right up my alley. I hope that if there is a tour that we get to see some jets with their guts showing--I mean it's airplanes, right...who doesn't like airplanes (especially when compared to some stuffy conference room). Lemme go climb on and rub up against an airplane and I'm as happy as a pig in...well you get the picture.
Needless to say I'm stoked! |

what would you do?
I am currently flying as a contractor in Afghanistan, and returning home the 10th. I absolutely want to attend, and there is no way of my leaving here early. so I can show up late on the 10th after 20 hours of round the world flying, miss most if not all of the networking, and hope I get the invite for the 11th. or just not go. I sent my info in requesting the invite, my application is current and I am actively trying to get hired, however its difficult to make these fair and recruiting events when you are in Afghanistan. Any advice? |
