Pretty hard to tell who's a "South" guppy captain these days without looking up an ISL award list. Some CAL guys have U1xxxxx numbers, some UA pilots have badges with blue backgrounds, guppy is everywhere.

So hard to know who to hate!......

Hate them all. It's what we do.

Generally, I experience good air flow. It's simply the temp that is too high... though once they crank the APU, it is significantly better.

Mods should just make a Sticky Thread for this board entitled something like "Airing of Grievances on POS Stretch Guppy"

Lol. True. Everyone who's every flown it(and flown any other equipment in their career, had to caveat that before some FO praises it before they've flown the other pilot friendly planes we have) knows it's a POS. Seems like on slow news days it's something to type about.

Guppies should not feel alone --- according to a Douglas instructor, the MadDog had a built-in cooling problem. The DC-9 was designed for a supply of cold air from the aft, (either an airhose connection or the APU), so to equalize cabin temps, the duct holes got larger toward the front. Then jetway-mounted hoses came along, so Delta ordered forward connection ports. This caused the long cabin to be cold in front and hot in back, unless you started the APU.

Without sandbags in the forward cargo bin, an empty MadDog would get tail-heavy on the ramp, trip the ground shift relay, and block the APU from battery starting. First flight of the day at an outstation: "OK, you all please come to the cockpit and jump up and down!"

I commute before and after the merger, the guppy is always too hot for me. We used to be able to have ground air and APU air at the same time, has that changed? BTW, on the Airbus and 747, my walk around is to shut off external air, as the APU does a better job.

Someone put a note in the FM that having both on could over pressure and damage the plenum, which several mechanics have told me is not possible. Inversely, there's nothing to my knowledge that prevents the rampers from plugging in the air and starting it up while the APU is running the packs.

Whoever does the walk around hits the OFF button on the ground air before they come up the stairs. APU on, air as needed.
