I know guys that burned bridges pre 9/11 and really hurt them later to try and get on with another airline. Don't want to do that. Some reasons I would chose UAL over Delta, closer base to home, more wide bodies, seems like a better contract than DAL, wife works at DAL (too many eggs in one basket?) uniforms, hotels, no training pay, no MD88.... any input? Feeling very fortunate, been waiting for UAL forever but now have an upcoming Delta class! How far out is UAL interviewing and holding classes? I will start mid Nov-early Dec with Delta. I will continue with the process as I currently don't have a bad/seniority number at a major. I wish UAL called first it would be so easy!
I’m fortunate enough to be in this very situation. Had an interview with both Delta and United within 7 days of each other. Hired by both. Delta offered a class date this summer and United training was not available until Nov/Dec.

I started with Delta, and have a transcontinental 2-leg commute to NYC. It is tough and costs both in days away from the family, and dollars to make happen. Delta is a great company, and I’ve really enjoyed the people…other than the commute (and the maddog does have some quirks…)

I live within 2 hours of SFO. Although I’m giving up 4 months of seniority at DAL and have to go thru training again, I think QoL is going to be vastly different. Of course there is risk in switching companies; but in my calculus the potential benefits outweigh the risk

This has not been an easy decision; I think the best advice is to put yourself in a situation where you have options. Ask for, and listen to all the different points of view. Then make the decision that best fits you and your family’s goals. In my case, I’ll be starting with United in a few weeks.

Welcome to United, you should be able to get SFO right out of training.

Plus its the junior WB FO base and the junior NB Captain base. They fly every airplane in the fleet out of SFO.

That is about the best reason there is to make a change. Commuting is the gift that keeps on taking. Almost every companies contract has some nuance that might be right up your alley, but generally involves hawking the open time or working on off days. But whether you are a max pay or max QOL person(PC!), living near your base makes every day a smart and sunny day. And if it happens to be the junior base with the junior NB captains and 3 years to WB FO, you are not only smart you are incredibly rich AND good looking.

Congrats.

Way less than 3 years to WB FO. I've been here under 3 and could hold the 777 and 787 in SFO with plenty below me. SFO is the place to be for fast movement. Too bad it's so freaking expensive!

So other than the shooting, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?

Thank you Captain.

+1000

There are two aspects of working at a major airline that completely change the nature of the job you are doing compared to other pilots at the same company.

1) How close you live to your base
2) Whether you fly domestic or international.

If your goal is time off to be with your child then 777 flying is the answer.

Our 777 fleet is set to grow significantly.

Our 737 fleet is set to grow significantly.

Our current CEO has proven he is relatively pro-labor and wants to grow the company.

I am biased and others here have expressed opposite opinions, but if you are fortunate enough to get an offer from UAL, then I recommend you seek out and talk to junior UAL pilots living near EWR before making a decision.

Report to Delta, try everything you can do to take a UAL interview. It will only take 2 days of your time to do. Then, if offered a position at UAL, decide if you want to leave Delta.

No brainer really.

It's not plenty. 3.5 years and I'd be bottom 25 on 777 and bottom 6 on 78.
