Default Part 91 Flying

What is the company’s view on flying Part 91 on days off?

not permitted if it counts towards FAR maximum flight/duty limitations.

Military flying always permitted.

True it has nothing at all to do with safety....just a control thing by UPS. It is in the IPA contract.

Not sure it is in the FOM...some managers fly large corporate jets on the side...

A while back I approached our ONT chief pilot and ended up with a letter allowing me to fly charter (91/135) and to flight instruct as long as I kept track of FAR legalities. I was on first year pay ($28K/year back then) and he understood I needed an extra job. This is a while ago and I’m not sure if they’d allow it today but it probably won’t hurt you to ask.

Thanks for the responses guys. Whalesurfer, you give me hope. It really is just to help get through the first year.

Also, I would say the majority of us only fly about 40-50 hours a month even though we credit 75+.

It’s also standard at most airlines, not just a UPS thing.

Article 10.V allows additional commercial flying primarily for the purpose of maintaining proficiency. This language was specifically written to apply to Second Officers or PFEs. There is an exception in the last paragraph that gives the Chief Pilots office some leeway. So, it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I no longer live in domicile, so I don't bid reserve any more. I believe the first year folks are flying a lot on reserve now, and the junior lines can be somewhat exhausting, so flying an additional commercial job for extra money sounds tough.
