Hallo Dschungel! Oh, all right, I guess that kind of weather is normal there! I was just a little frustrated about the bad weather we've had here in the lest couple of weeks, probably.

Thanks anyway!

Oh, and just to give you another positive comment: Your pictures are awesome! Your threads are always the first ones I open 'cause I enjoy your photography so much!
It's great to have the photo section back by the way, HSLD!

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the purpose of that tiny downward-facing winglet on the MD-10/11s?

Winglets try and reshape the vortices in such a way they will die off sooner. Vortices by mathematical definition cannot be minimized per Helmholtz Vortex Theorem, but they can be made more susceptible to viscous effects and friction. This in turn makes the vortex appear to be weaker to the wing although it is otherwise the same. A practical example is that if you blow a smoke ring it will not disperse on its own, but will eventually disperse depending on the amount of air flow in the room. Otherwise it would stay put forever. So by tailoring the shape of a vortex you can make it dissipate faster. As mentioned in the article winglets are nothing new, having been invented before a workable airplane.

Currently using a Canon G7 for most of these, sometimes a Nikon D40.
