1. Paul Tibbets, who just recently died.
2. Don't know. 3. Enola Gay is either his Mother, or Grandmother's name. "Enola" is "Alone" spelled backwards. 4. His son is, I think LtCol Paul Tibbets the 3rd, and is the Squadron Commander of the B-2 Squadron at Whiteman. The Squadron has the same designation (507th BS?) as the original squadron that Tibbets was in for the Hiroshima drop. #2.. http://www.toybum.com/getpicture.asp?itemid=47&type=gal I had the privilege of attending a dinner for him a few years ago and part of his original crew was there. All old, shrinking but still with quick wits. As I remember it was him, his nav, one crew member and his mechanic. Also attending the birthday party was the P-38 flown by Steve Hinton along with Roy Schafner (sp?), the fellow who put up the final $$$ to put Glacier Girl in the air. A third figure was Don Lopez who was a major figure at the Air and Space Museum. Schafner, Lopez and Tibbets have all gone west. It was a grand evening and a great privilege. |
It's not the 507th BS, but the 509th Compositie Sqd.
