I always thought missiles were kind of small, like you could actually carry them out the door, but I went to the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi a few years ago, and I was, well, suprised. Apparently the Phoenix missile is like 13 feet long. I always thought it was 5-6 feet.

The AMRAAM is about 350 lbs, and I think Phoenix was about 1000 lbs. So yeah, not so tiny or light.

Isn't that a bomb attached to the belly? It doesn't look like a tumor or strange growth.

I think they call it a "fastpack". Essentially the Eagles go straight ahead for the minimum time required then turn right. When they do turn right it is an airshow unto itself. Wow. My poor airplane was nearly shaken to bits.
