I have the 70-200 VR and it's fast, sharp, but a bit spendy. I bought it for fashion shoots and i love the way the long focal length compresses the background. I'll bet it work pretty well for shooting high revving japaneese sports cars too 
That said, you can't beat that 85mm prime. It's definitely one of the lens that I'd like to own someday for portraits - I love that bokeh when it's wide open.
