Thanks Tony, for the news links. Evergreen is a big player and getting bigger.

bluebravo, there was another article (which I don't have time to find) discussing the economics and politics behind Boeing's decision to build elsewhere and assemble at KPAE. It's quite extensive and complex.

Yeah it's called outsourcing. It seems to be what everyone is doing now.

Multisourcing -- spreads the wealth, usually reduces price as more competitors can bid for the work

Risk Sharing -- If contractor A agrees to do task X for $Y, that's his obligation. If he encounters difficulty and it winds up costing 2x $Y, he gets to suck it up. Boeing still only pays $Y. Contractor A assumed a risk that Boeing no longer carries. If Boeing had not outsourced the contract, Boeing would be paying the cost overruns. If the overruns put Contractor A out of business, Oh, Well.

There are aspects that make it very attractive.

Sorry for turning a photo thread into a discussion of global economy, so this will be my last post on this. I read somewhere that Boeing wanted to give some of the work to the countries that will also be buying the airplanes. Some say it is to "reward" them for future purchases, while others say that Boeing and these other countries now have each other by the balls, so to speak.

Like it or not, it's a whole different world out there now.

I'll take your word for it though.

This 747 was modified to carry new parts to assembly for Boeings new widebodies, if I'm not mistaken.
Read this NTSB report. This is the type of wake turbulence this thing is capable of creating. http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?e...22X01707&key=1

On a happier note, the Oscar Meyer Wiener Mobile is literally parked outside my hotel right now. The CFI is a friend of a friend and was shaken up by this incident.

Thanks check6 for the NTSB report. The student mentioned was not me (fortunately), but I can imagine the horror they faced. Flying in and out of BFI is difficult enough without Godzilla's flatulence.

So how many hot dogs can fit in that 747?

Two - one in the left seat and one in the right seat.
