Why would someone give up DAL or FedEx for another airline?

Not to commute....., Faster upgrade time...., You just don't like cargo...., Your impression of the place during the interview process...., Stories from your friends about the culture and you just determined that you would be happier somewhere else....!

People, especially youngsters, tend to forget the history of this business. You just pray that you make it to retirement and even then you're not entirely safe. Ask the United and Delta retirees who had their pensions turned over to the PBGC in bankruptcy.

DAL guys said most of their no shows, and brand new guys leaving, are leaving for UAL and FedEx.
Some guys said they no-showed, or quit early, because they wanted to live in base. We had a guy hired by DAL/UAL/AA, so two of the three were going to get a phone call. We also had a guy leave UAL just after indoc to go to DAL.

From what I'm hearing (as I don't work at any of them). DL has the best work rules for the passenger carriers followed closely by UA and then AA. So a fair number have left for DL. The company and cockpit culture DL isn't as "happy go lucky friendly," as say SWA, so a few have made that jump as well. Then, no one but FDX and UPS are offering new hires a pension that I'm aware of... so FDX classes have had some junior DL, UA, AA, and even SWA guys. UPS also has a pension, but a very tough schedule for the first few years and a long upgrade, so there have been guys bailing UPS for all the Legacies and I met one UPS FO that's now at JetBlue. I was once told that if you include the SWA stock options they got back in the 90's up through today, a senior SWA CA has probably made as much or more than say, a 777 CA at DL. That info was coming from former-NWA now DL 777 CA. Remember SWA, FDX, and UPS have never been in BK. Then there's the factor of bases and guys looking at commuting for the next 25-30 years of their career.
This is all stuff that I've heard from my jumpseat or just talking with guys in the various terminals. Everyone's idea of the perfect job is different which makes people jump. The opportunity is there, so why not take it...

Why any candidate would put up with what Hawaiian puts them through, no travel, no hotel, short notice, embarrassingly low pay, poor treatment in general is beyond me. If you have any other options pursue them to the fullest, if nothing else works out, Hawaiian is a good place to get started while you build experience for the majors or a real grown up airline. Hawaiian is somewhat the clown car of aviation companies.
