The day will come when single pilot operations will be a reality. It will take time but it will happen. The way we view technology now will be different than 10-20-30 years from now. We have cars that can park themselves and provide spacing on the freeway just by programming the buffer you like. As people become more reliant on technology they fear it less.
I'm sure if you asked a pilot from the 70's era if he thought the AF would be flying pilot-less strike aircraft and hitting targets with precision they probably would've laughed their asses off at you... but look where we are now.
