Unlike most I grew up and lived most of my 43 yrs in the Lakeland area. Live was good and crime was low. Now Memphis is number one in violent crime and in the top 10 for most other offenses. There are good places to live currently with children Collierville, East Germantown, some isolated areas out east in the Poplar area. Most guys live in Gtown, Collierville or out in the Surrounding counties Shelby, Desoto, Fayette. Look at the published school scores and visit them to decide for yourself which suit you desires. I have heard good things about all except Fayette. Guy I am currently flying with just reenrolled his 2 girls in St. Marys a private school for next year to the tune of 27,000. Here is the rub to Memphis; you are one mall or new subdivision from having to move. Once an area gets desirable the developers build zero lot line houses of low quality and bring in people you might not want to be your neighbors which tank the neighbor hood eventually. Collierville seems to have staved this off more than most. My advice would be possibly rent first to see if your family likes Memphis and find a REALLY GOOD realtor. For what its worth, once I started flying for FedEx I moved 2 hours east to Pickwick Lake. There are many good places to live within 3 hours drive to Memphis. PM me if you have any questions.
