Checkrides are those which are the practical portion of an application for a certificate or rating. These flights must be taken with a fed or designee. The only outcomes of checkrides are passes, fails, and discontinuances.

Part 141 schools conduct stage or phase checks during your training to ensure progress. These are NOT checkrides. Any instructor within a 141 program can, with required training and experience, conduct a phase check. A part 141 instructor can also conduct checkrides if he is a fed or desginee and approved by the feds to do so. Some part 141 schools, as I've learned from some APC members, can conduct a simultaneous EOC (end of course) stage check with a checkride. The only possible outcomes of these are the three I've listed above.
