Yes, you can pour ice directly into this cooler. Only issue is, at the end of the day, part of the ice that melted into water will leak out of the top-side zipper, if it's turned on its side. It won't leak if kept upright.
I've gone to using 2 - quart size zip-lock bags with ice and I don't have to tell the hotel driver not to put the bag on its side. This seems to be working well.
