Reducing APC usage must be some ill-informed rumor. I just went through some excellent CBT training to teach me the newest, most up-to-date industry best practices on operating Boeing 777s. The new procedure says to start the APU after clearing the runway, in fact we got an awesome PDF file complete with flows to show us how to do it!
In the past we would risk the APU not being ready at the gate by using our judgement to having the APU online and available to coincide with "brakes set" (about 90 seconds prior). Now, thanks to fine "brochure" training, we can start it right away after clearing the runway and not be distracted by having to turn a switch as we approach the taxing parking maneuver.
I can't believe everyone who complains about this training or new procedures. Just remember, these managers know what they're doing!
