Not sure about other places, but here at Eagle there has to be a serious suspicion of abuse before it would ever come to that. Even then they would just have you go to our AMR doctor's office at HQ.
On another note, I had a Skywest jumpseater the other day. Poor guy has been with them for 4 years, still on Reserve and has a 3rd circle of hell schedule that goes something like 6 on 2 off. Plus he commutes.
He said that this past year alone he has called in sick 36 times.
I have a buddy at Skywest, he calls in sick all the time...
I'm too scared of getting fired to call in sick when I'm not. Call me a wimp but i don't want to ever get fired for that. Then when you are asked the "why did you leave your last job" question, in the words of Ricky Recardo, "you have some serious explaining to do!" I figure i'll at least the ink dry on my new commercial certificate first.
I think it was the "don't ever lie to me" speech I was given during indoc from a chief pilot. Scared me enough to never try any funny business.
