Wake up, feel bad, call scheduling, go back to bed at ASA. You accrue sick time monthly, which can be used for your sick calls. I never called in the first year, so I don't know how it is handled for probationary pilots. The deduction is automatic if your credit is below minimum. Not sure what happens if your credit is above minimum.

It's handled the same for probationary pilots. I've called out sick twice my first year. The first 6 months though you do not get paid for it even if you tell scheduling "sick paid" and not "sick un-paid".

At ACA/Indy Air we did not even have to call. They had an icon online that said "I'm Sick" that removed you from the entire trip when you clicked it. You had to call in well if you wanted back on the last day or two of the trip. Ahhhh, the good old days...

Pretty much the same at Pinnacolaba... you take time off your sick balance to cover the time you missed... if you want you can also pick up open time later in the month to "buy back" your sick balance...

and in our contract they have to pay for the doctor's visit if they require a note...

On another note, I had a Skywest jumpseater the other day. Poor guy has been with them for 4 years, still on Reserve and has a 3rd circle of hell schedule that goes something like 6 on 2 off. Plus he commutes.

He said that this past year alone he has called in sick 36 times.
I have a buddy at Skywest, he calls in sick all the time...

I'm too scared of getting fired to call in sick when I'm not. Call me a wimp but i don't want to ever get fired for that. Then when you are asked the "why did you leave your last job" question, in the words of Ricky Recardo, "you have some serious explaining to do!" I figure i'll at least the ink dry on my new commercial certificate first.

I think it was the "don't ever lie to me" speech I was given during indoc from a chief pilot. Scared me enough to never try any funny business.

You better be scared! You wouldn't want the D.O. to have to call you personally and inquire exactly to the nature of your illness to make sure you aren't abusing the system! You better have your story straight.

Oh and not more than 1 CA and 1 FO can be sick at the exact same time or SCHEDULE FAIL!

We're not flipping burgers here!

Like others have said, it's by choice. He is definitely living in a small, senior base. I've been at SkyWest 7 months, and have had a line for the past 5 months, with about 16 days off/month.

I totally understand wanting to live in base. But I don't understand those that do it and also feel they deserve an awesome schedule.
