The first day is not a travel day. I haven't done it for a couple years, but I usually got 30-36 hours notice because they assigned something in their morning setups. I checked VIPS and got the notification, they might not have called until 24 prior. I always called within :30 of block-in, but always was either assigned something the day prior or released when I called. I once deviated home because I knew I had a 1 in 7 and it was my last R-day, then the scheduler called and "politely scolded" me because he had to notify me of my 1 in 7 and was going to do it when I called in. I think if you tell them you want to deviate home they can let you know if you're needed back or not.
