My advice would be to shoot for an internship at a major. Many get hired at Horizon without the internship, but connections with the big boys is what you want. Don't believe me, just ask the new CAL hires that were interns. Many of the airline internships don't pay, but the experience and connections are priceless. Just my two cents.
