As far as choosing to live where you work it's not that simple. First, for years there has been ZERO seat movement at this airline as a result of age 65 and the parking of the guppies. So, a whole mess of guys got bumped and have been stuck in their present location. Guys with houses, kids, spouses with jobs etc. So, it ain't as simple as you think. Since hired I've been shoved around to 4 domiciles and only avoided a fifth by delaying my return from furlough.
Second, a uniform is not required to jumpseat.
Third, if you'd like to be able to jumpseat, go get an ATP, spend a few years building time while making less than $30K (or flying in Afghanistan) and then try to get an airline job. It's just that simple. UAL interviews something like 25 dudes for every one they hire. Till then you are free to hang out on the Maint guys forum and spread your acumen with guys who may share your viewpoint because most of us do not. I would just about guarantee that no pilot is hanging out there pontificating with exclamation points about all things under the sun WRT to wrenching on airplanes.
We take enough crap from management, our passengers, and DEN gate agents. We don't need any lecturing from you.

It IS what it IS! You could have done anything else, You chose to be a pilot and you take what comes with the job. When My Med was no longer good I did what I had to do. BTW I Do have Jumpseat authority!! Luckily I've Never had to use it. I've got ENOUGH time In Cramped cockpits to last a lifetime! If I'm going to jumpseat It will be in a 757 or Larger..
