We can only carry jumpseaters if we have a reciprical agreement. They can't ride in the cockpit at the moment and must flow to the back so there must be a seat available. Cathay is not on the jumpseat list because most foreign carriers do not allow jumpseat access for free. Some will let you ride up there is you have some form of ticket or zed fare.
Maybe the guy was on a Zed fare and because he was in uniform, the OP thought he was jumpseating, especially if maybe the guy was courteous and introduced himself to the crew. Possible?
The question is, did this guy show up as a jumpseater on the AWABS.
