In the big scheme, people probably make a much bigger deal out of it than it is. You have to pay for a huge amount of your hours. 190 and a commercial ticket doesn't get you in a 747, so it gets somewhat ridiculous and hypocritical. It's usually a moral thing, those of us that could somehow fathom to pay for it (not without a lot of financial stress) see it as immoral to work for less than a livable wage. You are providing a service and value, and you should get something in return. It would be like making a janitor pay to clean things, a carpenter to build things, etc. It's wrong on a very basic level, and it has nothing to do with flying.

When airlines look at your hours, maybe they'll ask where you got them. Your stuff probably has to get through HR before it's looked at any pilot, but maybe you are rich and can afford "experience" that way. Why would it be fair to discriminate at that point? I don't think it would. How your fellow pilots see you might be something different, but that's what you are risking by doing it. The most important question to answer is: If I'll work for that little money or pay someone for experience, why should ANY company pay me a decent wage for my services. It's ALL experience right? You set a dangerous precedent.
