Family and friends are way more important than anything else in this world. Keep your life, fly at your own pace on your own dime so your family and friends maybe can enjoy it WITH you. I'm slowly working on my IFR, then will move on to other ratings, etc, while keeping my job (and house). If the industry ever gets better for those starting out, then I'll consider it, if it doesn't, then I have one awesome hobby. Work on getting a better computer job and go on nights and weekends...
Tell them to take their 20k a year and shove it.
