Even if he did make 115K....which I call BS on ...just because USA Today says so doesnt make it true....but even if he did...cost of living is hell there.... AND he is the exception rather than the rule.... I guarantee you sanitation workers in my town make less than 25K... cops less than 35k.. firefighters START at 24K a year.... things are different everywhere
Pilots however are stuck with crummy wages nationwide even if you get JFK as your base.

Where I live a nice two bedroom apartment costs $800-1000/month. 100 miles west and it jumps to $1400 or more. The world of minimum wage work and common jobs is gaining on pilots. In 10 years a pilot will wish they earned as much as a handyman.

Family and friends are way more important than anything else in this world. Keep your life, fly at your own pace on your own dime so your family and friends maybe can enjoy it WITH you. I'm slowly working on my IFR, then will move on to other ratings, etc, while keeping my job (and house). If the industry ever gets better for those starting out, then I'll consider it, if it doesn't, then I have one awesome hobby. Work on getting a better computer job and go on nights and weekends...
Tell them to take their 20k a year and shove it.
