Yup. The word "ever" is key.

I know of two UAL pilots that answered the "ever" question differently and with wildly different results. Both had clean 10 year records on paper.

One was convicted of public indecency (i.e. streaking) during a college stunt and honestly answered "yes" even though his conviction had automatically been expunged because of his otherwise clean record. He had a laugh with the interviewers during the interview when questioned and is currently employed.

The other thought his record was clean and answered "no" and was subsequently fired during indoc when UAL HR determined that he lied on his application after a deep background check showed otherwise. Yes, there are companies that supply background checks to Fortune 500 companies that record public criminal convictions in "real time" and thus do not purge their records.
