For religion, it is all about class and caste, especially in the Indian Sub Continent.... the primal human need to belong is almost like air and food. Reject the religious and societal expectations and one will be shunned, shamed and outcast.

In India, 30 year old man marries twenty year old girl. Man has all the power and usually keeps it. Girl is told to comply and life will be easier. Resist and life will be hard.
Husband keeps wife in line or he will suffer the scorn of society. Freedom and personal autonomy is sacrificed.....

Girl meets husband once or twice, gets married and now society says is more than normal to have sex with someone she doesn't know... It was similar in the West 200 years ago.....

True, often the best choice is to create a new game and deny others the pleasure of controlling your life.
No need to join every silly game that comes along.
Easier said than done.... even in the West.....
