I don't see how "selling" leave back would work in your favor regardless if you have a job or not. Unless you owed someone money and they were threatening to break your legs

I worked and got paid my regular pay.
Then I retired and some time later I got a big check from my sold back leave.
If I had taken terminal, I would have got my regular pay (like above) and then some time after I retired I would have gotten....................nothing.
Not only that - but I wanted to fly up till the end. I would have stayed longer if I had been able too!
