Sell Leave
#21
When I separated from AD in 2007 I had 112 days of leave. I just went on terminal leave. It was nice to be getting a regular check for several months. I don't see how "selling" leave back would work in your favor regardless if you have a job or not. Unless you owed someone money and they were threatening to break your legs
.
.Here was my situation. I had a separation date of 31AUG08. As of July 1, I did not have a job lined up. If I did I would have gone terminal and started then. Because my interviews had all been cancelled I was forced to look for a real job. As you probably know contractors and civilian employers in general dont look at you or care until you're within about a month of your separation date and most contractors (defense) wouldnt allow you to work on terminal (depending on contract). So...with no job it made sense for me to work until 31AUG drawing he same pay/benefits then take the leave buyback on top of that. Make sense?

There may be some confusion here. If you have a hard separation date, perhaps due to HYT, working until the last day and then cashing out leave would make more sense if you don't have a job lined up.
But if you can control your exit date and have something to be doing after that, then terminal leave after your desired exit date is the way to go...you get full allowances the whole time and earn a few extra days of leave in the process.
De-MOBing reservists should absolutely take terminal leave, regardless of what you are doing or not doing after de-MOB.

How does the BAH work on terminal leave? Is it for the location you retire from or where you are retiring to? I'm overseaas but will return stateside for terminal leave. It would be a nice chunk of change if I got the overseas housing allowance but somehow I dont thinkthat is what I'll get.

I worked and got paid my regular pay.
Then I retired and some time later I got a big check from my sold back leave.
If I had taken terminal, I would have got my regular pay (like above) and then some time after I retired I would have gotten....................nothing.
Not only that - but I wanted to fly up till the end. I would have stayed longer if I had been able too!

. I would have done the same thing you did. Just numbers at that point.

Rooster when you separate or retire from overseas I think they make you go.back stateside to do your final out as they move you back to the US ( for SOFA / legal reasons). Since OHA has different requirements than BAH you probably just get non locality BAH rate once you've left your overseas housing until you're a civilian. It should all depend on the contract and what your previous job was.
Should be no conflict with GS jobs, I've seen people leave Friday wearing BDUs and return Monday to the same office wearing a tie, with months of terminal leave on the books.
