They did not scrap the LA idea.... they posponed it several months ago waiting for the results of the open skies. The idea was to feed trafic into LA with smaller aircraft then use the 777 between LA and Sydney. Which makes more sense then Vancouver. They may return to this plan soon enough.
The 340's were a good plane, they purposly made it 4 engines so it would not have to follow certain regulations.... just bad luck damn OPEC keeps driving the price of oil up
